MSU Clinical Center

Nicole Bowden

I grew up in Lawton, OK. After graduating from Oklahoma State University, I worked as a research technician and then research assistant at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas in a neuroscience lab that studied Fragile X syndrome. While I enjoyed doing research, I wanted to be involved in the clinical aspect of the brain, so I went back to school at Kansas City University.

I was born and raised on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio in a family that bleeds Spartan green and white. I attended the University of Notre Dame for my undergraduate degree, majoring in biology and French, while meeting my now husband along the way. My first year following college I lived in Paris, France where I completed a Master's thesis on the portrayal of physicians in contemporary French cinema (and ate a lot of really good food in the process!).

I was raised in a Russian immigrant household by an M.D. mother and a PhD father. Good education was always valued in my family. I was raised in West Bloomfield, Michigan, and my parents and three younger siblings still live there.

I was interested in pursuing the arts early in my schooling, but I was drawn to medical research because I wanted to have a more direct and positive influence on the world.  After completing a college degree in art education, I went back to school for a D.O./Ph.D.

My dad was a fighter pilot and my mom a nurse in the Air Force. We moved to Phoenix Arizona and eventually settled in Hartland, MI when my dad went to fly for the National Guard and work for Ford. I attended MSU and the University of Michigan and graduated with my Masters in Physical Therapy. As a PT, I worked for Sparrow, as well as several other metro Detroit hospitals.
