Ketogenic Diet for Refractory and Super-refractory Status Epilepticus Education Sparrow Education Series:
Sparrow is offering a free program that incorporates the Ketogenic Diet (KD) in the treatment of refractory status epilepticus (RSE), when seizures do not respond to adequate treatment, that is safe and decreases use of seizure medication for patients in the Neurocritical Care Unit. Studies show that 35% of patients with epilepsy are refractory to treatment and the KD is an effective adjunct to manage refractory seizures using diet instead of increasing medications. Two speakers from Grand Rapids will share their experience developing and implementing the KD protocol at St Mary’s Hospital. This program is a unique educational opportunity to learn and become involved in an interdisciplinary approach that includes physicians, nurses, dietary and pharmacy team members to develop a neurocritical care ketogenic diet protocol for Sparrow.
