Genesys Regional Medical Center Ophthalmology Residency

Genesys is proud to be associated with the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Our participation in the Consortium of Osteopathic Residencies in Ophthalmology (CORO) provides a wide variety of clinical and didactic opportunities for furthering resident education.

Our Ophthalmology program has expanded significantly in the past few years with the introduction of new subspecialties in retina, glaucoma, pediatrics and neuro-ophthalmology.

Year One

  • Development of basic examination skills and technical expertise in perimetry, fundus photography and assisting in various laser procedures.
  • Allowed to perform a variety of surgical procedures under direct supervision including lid procedures, strabismus surgery, retrobulbar block and introduction into small incision cataract surgery by phacoemulsification.

Year Two

  • Knowledge base expanded through the Basic Science Course in Ophthalmology.
  • Increased involvment in cataract and intraocular lens procedure, glaucoma filtration surgery, eyelid and strabismus procedures.
  • Greater management role in treatment of clinical patients under guided supervision.
  • Significant out-time is granted to pursue subspecialty training.
  • Encouraged to spend time in interested areas of possible fellowship training.

Year Three

  • Focus on mastering surgical skills developed during first two years of training.
  • Increased exposure to refractive surgery.
  • Instruction in advanced phacoemulsification techniques.

On-Going

  • Continuous assessment of knowledge base using the Ophthalmology Knowledge Assessment Test.
  • Completion of basic science course offered by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
  • Participation in monthly house staff lectures.
  • Actively monitor all inpatient admissions and emergency room consultations.
  • Attend weekly lectures at Kresge Eye Clinic and Michigan State University interactive on-line TV learning sessions.
