Stroke Fellowship

   Fellowships

The Stroke fellowship at Sparrow Health System/Michigan State University provides extensive experience in management of acute stroke patients including thrombolysis, enrollment of acute stroke patients into clinical trials, and outpatient stroke clinics. We care for more than 450 stroke admissions per year. The fellow works closely with attendings, neurology residents, interns, nurse coordinators, social workers, dieticians, physical, speech, and occupational therapists. We have excellent neuroimaging which includes acute CT perfusion, CT angiography and MRI diffusion/perfusion scanning. Our stroke fellowship is designed to give flexible training opportunities for fellows. Further training is available in intensive care, neuroimaging, TCD, carotid doppler, neurorehabilitation, clinical and basic science research. Fellows will be expected to attain certification in Neurosonology and also Neuroimaging if interested. Didactic teaching is emphasized throughout the fellowship. A monthly stroke conference is held. Grand Rounds occur weekly.

A second year of research training is also available for selected fellows. Areas of research opportunities include, models of ischemic brain injury, neuroscience and molecular biology of brain ischemia and clinical neuroepidemiology.
